“Vanguard Recruit” I’m all for transparency but, when it comes to morale, sometimes things are best if they are a bit opaque.
Who is Nok? Nok was briefly mentioned at the beginning of the flashback story, albeit softly as Hob and Nak approached the tent. You can click the transcript to “hear” what they said.

Against a backdrop of tents and the stalagmites of the large cavern, Nab sits on a chest with head in hands. The gobo's eyes shift and glance to the side when the monkish gobo sitting on the large sack nearby breaks the silence.
Robed gobo: "<I'm saddened that Nok fell. A great gobo. And friend.>"
Panel 2
The view closes in on the robed gobo, who looks up in thought while imparting knowledge...
Robed gobo: "<You know the truth behind Rek's rhetoric. But the goal was to give hope to those that need it. Without it, there's no strength.>"
Panel 3
...turning to look towards Nab (offscreen) as the gobo's statement continues.
Robed gobo: "<We all need to be strong to survive this. You. Need to be strong. To protect our past. And our future.>"
Panel 4
The scene's focus shifts to Nab sitting next to a barrel near a wooden wall. The robed gobo (offscreen) finishes but the last sentence makes Nab's eyes widen, surprised by the sudden news.
Robed gobo: "<Spend this night with family and kin, Nab. Tomorrow, you, Nik, and Nak join us in the vanguard.>"
