Happy Fourth Birthday

by Michael Scotta on April 15, 2021 at 5:30 pm

Happy Fourth BirthdayHappy fourth birthday, Dante! I mentioned I was only going to do two Instagram posts this year and I couldn’t even follow through on that. I guess this will have to do (and yes, I’ll remember this when you ask for the keys). And to anyone wondering, I’m not a monster. We are going to have a very happy fourth birthday party… in just a few moments actually.

In addition to the two Instagram posts, I speculated about whether I was going to attempt Inktober this year. Well, I have decided I will be skipping the 2021 October event (yeah, I know if can be done all year round and not just in one month). I am battling to get the buffer back up and have been failing to increase the depth of files. There have been a couple moments since the beginning of this year were I felt I was going to miss an update. Thankfully, it hasn’t come to that but I am still rushing to have strips ready. There may come a time where I will have to skip an update. I still hope to post 51 comics this year. Things might just have to spill over into the next year.

Let’s leave it at that for now… I have a party to attend.

Three Year Anniversary

Three Year AnniversaryI can’t believe that Gobo Gazette is having its three year anniversary today! And I can’t believe Bam wasn’t around for last year’s… I mean the spoof here would have been perfect!

It is a brand new year! Thank goodness. Not to jinx it or anything but how could 2021 be any worse? 2020 was rough for many. While it wasn’t as bad for me as it was for other, it still left its mark. You may have noticed that I did not post many holiday Instagram images. Sure, there was Inktober, but I haven’t done anything creative for it or the website, other than the update alerts there and on both Twitter and on the Facebook page. I’ll let you in on a little secret: those updates are what I imagine the new website design to look like. Just one of the little things besides Instagram posts that I wanted to have done last year and the year to come.

As mentioned in last week’s comic update, those changes will have to wait. There will be one other Instagram creative bit done for April, and Inktober is kind of up in the air. I stated that my buffer was greatly depleted, and it is. Not only am I behind in illustrating the strips, but my story-boarding has long been neglected. Don’t worry! I have plenty of story in my head. It’s just a matter of thinking out how to present it. Thankfully, this holiday break helped. I am trying to avoid this as much as possible, but there might come a time when Gobo Gazette doesn’t update on Friday. Or it updates without color. Whatever the case, my hope is that if something like this does happen, I will be able to make up the difference and get back on schedule as quickly as possible.

Now for some good news. We are getting to a part of the story that I have been looking forward to for a long time! Until now, the dirty dozen have been on the move, barely having enough time to settle down. The longest amount of time in one spot was just under a season! It has been relatively fast-paced, introducing elements that will have a larger impact in the future. The last of those elements is coming soon. From here out… well, I don’t want to give much away. I hope that you are looking forward to it as much as I am.

Have a happy new year and be careful out there.

Inktober 2020

Inktober 2020 Day One EntryWith 2020 being such a crazy year, I am surprised how quickly it became October and, with that, Inktober! It has been so crazy, I thought I would share my day one entry instead of the official logo. Wait a moment? Is this a Pokémon crossover? Yes, but with a very important disclaimer… and with a macron instead of an acute accent. While Pōk is shown here attempting to catch a Magikarp without a Poké Ball, the images I do for Inktober are mostly non-canonical. So if you were expecting the Gobos to be blazed by a Charizard, don’t hold your breath!

This will be the third Inktober for Gobo Gazette, my fourth in total. While Inktober has changed with time (you don’t have to do it just in October, check out the alternative guidelines) the basics are the same: a set of inked pieces of art, each based upon a keyword. Tired of getting only one Gobo fix each week? In October you get a bonus seven per week (roughly speaking)!

As mentioned, the image here is just a teaser – to see all of the art for Inktober 2020, you’ll need to go to the Gobo Gazette Instagram page. And if you want to see my Year One Inktober art, check out this album on my personal Facebook account. Following GG’s Instagram is just one way to get updates. The others being Facebook, Twitter and via RSS feed. Check those out if you are into social media… and please share!

Stay safe out there!

(Long) Neglected Cast Updates

by Michael Scotta on August 31, 2020 at 1:38 pm

Giant Cave SpiderWell, hasn’t 2020 been something? We are three-fourths through the year and it doesn’t look like it is going to get any better. Although one thing that is coming out of this is some long overdue awareness and recognition of discrimination, the price is quite steep. And it shouldn’t cost that much or take this long to make sure that everyone is provided an equal footing, no matter their background. To say that normal routines have been disrupted would be an understatement, and the same applies here at Gobo Gazette. I had plans to maintain Instagram posts (other than update alerts), updating the Cast page, implementing a Locations page, and changing the overall look of the website to better match the social media alerts. As you can see, all that went out the window around mid-April.

But good news, everyone! I’ll be updating the long neglected cast page! A new cast entry will be added to the Gobo Gazette Instagram account, today and the next three days! You can see the first entry in this post (talk about overdue)! On Friday, I will be adding these entries to the cast page as well as going through the archives and updating each with new tags. The plan is to get back on schedule. Along with the neglected cast, I am hoping to get those other changes in place by Christmas*! And on top of all of this, there is Inktober! For all of you artists new and old, I believe tomorrow is when they post this year’s prompts. If you have never checked it out before, do so!

So, despite everything going on out there, there is some good news out there. It’s just unfortunate that you have to dig for it under a heaping pile of hot mess.

Stay safe out there!

Happy Third Birthday

Happy Third BirthdayI want to wish my son, Dante, a happy third birthday! I think it is very interesting that, of all the methods to do so, the first way I am doing so is virtually. When I was growing up, you either got a phone call or a birthday card if someone wasn’t going to make it to your party. Now you get a text, email or post on social media. Maybe it’s just me, but I think the personal touch is lost in this digital age. It feels pretty… automated. Like this post. I am creating it the day before and scheduling it for upload today! But now that I think about it, it is kind of like handing an analog birthday card to the mail clerk. People still do that. Right?

But I digress. I am very happy that my boy has such a wonderful imagination and seems quite oblivious to the world outside our windows. I am not saying we don’t get him outside. We do. It’s just not so easy with a shelter in place order. Perhaps he gets it from his family. Everyone at home is riding this thing out quite well. I can only hope the same goes for you. I think the key is to make sure that you set time aside to imagine. To play. Living in a small apartment, you realize that you don’t need a large space to have fun. Just remember that staying at home might be tough but it is helping everyone out right now. So, if you are family or friend – or a regular viewer of Gobo Gazette – and you want to wish someone a happy third birthday (or whatever number that might be), do so virtually. Stay safe out there!
