Take a Break from Labor

Break From LaborHappy Labor Day! It’s that time again for an extended weekend were one can take a break from labor and get one last barbecue in before it gets cold. That’s what Labor Day is about… right? Well, that’s holidays in general really. Labor Day in the U.S. and Canada is the day celebrating all the workers that have worked hard to make the wonderful things that we sometimes take for granted. It also celebrates the unions that came about to make sure they were treated fairly. Back in the day, there were too many fat cats about. (Actually, I think the cat population hasn’t changed… they just got sneakier at getting to the cream.) So, if you’re a laborer or somebody that busts their butts all year round, raise a glass of your favorite beverage. Cheers!

And speaking of those that need to take a break from labor, it looks like there are five gobos that need a rest. At least when they moved Krak, it was to fulfill a purpose. Our crowned gobo needs to take a step back from Ego Land. Hopefully, the rescue attempt that is happening in the comic will get you back on course to Gobo Land!

Arigato

Arigato訪ねてきてくれて、ありがとう (Tazunete kite kurete, arigato)! Please note that I do not speak Japanese. I found this translation online and when I passed it by my wife, she said “All Good.” You might be wondering why I am going through all this trouble. Well, my mother-in-law had traveled from Japan and spent the last ten weeks with us. And it was quite enjoyable. I had first met her, her mother and her daughter when she was still living in Hawaii. That was many years ago. I am happy to say that little has changed since then, other than we are all a bit older – hopefully wiser – and there was a grandson for her to see in person for the first time.

Ten weeks seems a long time but it went by too quickly. We all saw her off just the other day and we found out this morning that she has arrived safely back home. Among the items she returned with is a printed version of this Instagram image (albeit in an 8×10 format). When she had asked for a gobo drawing, I thought “why settle on just one?” Plus it gave me an option to explore a different take on the twelve of them (I don’t think Bam gets it). It is a kind of omiyage, which is so much more than just a souvenir. And it is my little way of saying arigato. We hope to see you again soon!

It’s the Fourth of July

2019 Fourth of JulyIt’s the Fourth of July once more. It is time again to celebrate the uniting thirteen colonies against their sovereign across the ocean. As my friend is want to say, “Treason is the Reason for the Season.” Overacting aside, the significance of this day tends to be lost on most people. Today, most of my fellow Americans celebrate the Fourth of July like any other summer day. We gather together for cook outs and barbecues. We tend to eat way too much food and imbibe far too much drink. And the drink of choice is likely to be fermented. Really, the only thing that sets it apart from yet another gastronomical gathering is the fireworks. We just can’t wait until the sun goes down and the sky darkens. In fact, we light firecrackers, sparklers and other explosives just to get us through the day!

In the end, the day is all about having a good time. So grab a hot dog and a glass of lemonade. Or a burger and a brew? Perhaps some aged steak and a glass of wine if you’re fancy. Sit back and get ready for the fireworks. But, unlike Bam here, be mindful of where you are and the high explosives. We want you all to close the evening with family and friends, and not in the emergency room counting your fingers. Or limbs, for that matter. Be safe. And have a happy Fourth of July, everyone!

Hugs on Father’s Day

2019 Father's DayWho doesn’t like some hugs on Father’s Day? This guy, apparently! This is a direct follow up to the previous post, both images – as always – are viewable on our Instagram page. In past editions of Dungeons and Dragons and Pathfinder, Dwarves had a hatred against goblinoids as a racial trait. That doesn’t seem right. Maybe it is just a hatred of the hugs?

Think about it for a moment. How many shows have you seen, novels you have read, that show any dwarf as “lovey-dovey”? A great number of media sources show them as gruff and surly. It has been some time since I’ve seen Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. There might be one of two hugs in there. But that is an exception to the rule, and a Disney portrayal. You will most likely see dour warriors over comical miners in any work of fiction. Maybe they are just upset that their stout ladies are never around? Or unhappy that they may or may not have beards as lustrous as their own? All of you writers and directors out there! Get those Dwarves some hugs! And don’t forget dad! Give him a bunch of hugs on Father’s Day!

Another Mother’s Day

2019 Mother's DayIt’s another Mother’s Day! Have you ever heard the phrase “a brother from another mother”? How about a baby from another lady? No? Me neither. I think the soldier from the Party of Adventurers™ is thinking something like that right now. How do parent’s deal with this? I know I was quite rambunctious when I was young. Quite the handful. I am guessing that they will just stay the course and get the job done. At least that is what I am trying to do. It is not that easy sometimes…

I hope that all of you mothers out there have a wonderful day today. And a special shout out goes to mine. You’ve had to deal with us monsters growing up. Thank you for not shaking us off when we got too clingy.

And for all of you monsters out there. Make sure to do something very nice for your mama, especially if you are still living at home. (Yes, you know who you are – I was one too for a time.) It should not be “another Mother’s Day”, make it something special. Flip the script. Change things up. You know your mom best, so give it your all!
